Which is better, foam or spring mattress?

Nick N |

When buying a new mattress, there are a lot of factors to consider. The first choice you’re faced with is deciding which is better, a foam or spring mattress? While every mattress has its pros and cons, some types are better than others. However, it also depends on the way you sleep and your comfort level.

In this article, we will look at the pros and cons of foam and spring mattresses to help you decide which is best for your sleeping habits. Hopefully, by the end of it, you will have more direction in deciding which mattress to buy.

Foam mattresses are made of manmade material such as polyurethane foam, latex foam, and memory foam (viscoelastic). It was actually NASA who created memory foam in the 1960s. This material is compressed and made to provide ultimate comfort and mold to your body.

The pros of a foam mattress include:

  • Soft surface
  • Isolated motion so your partner doesn’t feel you move
  • Molds to your body shape

Some cons of a foam mattress include:

  • Off-gassing
  • Slow-motion response
  • No heat transfer to keep you cool at night
  • Not durable and shows wear early in its life and breaks down over time

Innerspring mattresses are considered the traditional mattress and have been perfected over the years. A spring mattress consists of springs, coils, or innerspring made of steel—these metal springs contract under your weight to provide firm support.

The pros of a spring mattress include:

  • Firm support
  • Affordable price points
  • Motion responsive bounce
  • More durable with steel springs that do not break down quickly

Some cons of a spring mattress include non isolated movements so your partner may feel you move, can be too firm for some people, and they should be flipped or rotated over time.

There is a third option when considering whether a foam or spring mattress is better, though!

A hybrid mattress takes the plush comfort of a foam mattress and the traditional and perfected design of a spring mattress and combines them into a comfortable and great mattress. Not too soft and not too firm, a hybrid mattress is a perfect compromise between the two.
